Movie Brides - Wedding Style of the Silver Screen

Soak up some inspiration with our most loved stylish movie brides. We've picked movies from slightly more recently than the vintage brides and looks we normally feature. We have featured many a celeb and movie bride from bygone era's previously on our blog, and we'd like to mix it up a bit to give you a bit of inspiration from more recent times. After all, putting a vintage spin on your wedding isn't about dressing up in a costume from past decades, it's about adding your own twist, and being influenced by the style of the era with many brides adding just a hint of vintage in their accessories. And yes, they may not be real life but who hasn't watched a good wedding film and swooned over the dress, the hairpiece, the veil...and admit it, who hasn't had a good cry at one of these! If you've been influenced by a movie bride's style, or if you always had a dream dress you saw on a film, let us know! Leave us a comment below!
  •  Jennifer Garner in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
image: Jennifer Garner looks stunning in a romantic strapless lace gown by Manuel Mota for Pronovias in the 2009 rom com 'Ghosts of Girlfriend's Past' We love the mermaid shape of this dress, and finished with a casual up-do and vintage style pearls, Jennifer looks every bit the effortless bride. We adore the simple bunch of Lily of the valley, so effective! *Get the look.....with simple and understated bridal jewellery. Keep your makeup fresh and light with a cream blush such as Ladyblush from MAC and use a light mineral foundation. Keep false tan to a minimum if you are naturally very fair, either go au naturelle or use a very light tan such as the Dove summer glow, or for a more luxurious treatment, the Decleor manual tan is lovely and the colour is gorgeous on fair skin. image:
  • Kimberley Williams-Paisley in Father of the Bride
image: Well this film is almost vintage itself, but my all time favourite, an early 90's remake of the classic film which originally starred Elizabeth Taylor. I grew up with this film, it brings back memories of Saturday mornings watching it over and over with my sister! I still cannot watch this without crying, to the point where I couldn't even look at it in the emotional lead up to my own wedding! Check out the dress here, a couple of years ago I watched this and thought how dated my once dream dress now looked. But, watching it again over the weekend, there are so many elements of this beautiful silk lace dress which are seen today on bridal catwalks. From the full length lace sleeves and high neck line which we of course have seen on Kate Middleton, to the full length cathedral veil, and the pretty lace applique silk skirt, I think I can forgive that enormous double taffeta bow at the back! *Get the look... Update this dress with accessories. 'Annie' wore a floral embellished headband, try something similar but much more current such as the Natalia headpiece by Debbie Carlisle, or the Daisy headpiece. Update the hairstyle from this 90's permed look by going for something inspired by 40's smooth and glamorous waves, or an up-do to show off the neckline image: and
  •  Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City
image: This dress worn by Sarah Jessica Parker's character Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City caused mixed opinions in the wedding world, amongst brides and fans of Carrie. Designed exclusively for the film by Vivienne Westwood of course, some said that the style was perfect for Carrie's high fashion and quirky character. Some plain hated it! Either way, this dress was a success in causing a stir in the bridal fashion industry for it's unusual shape and neckline, teamed with a rather bizarre turquoise feather headdress. You've gotta love that veil though! *Get the look...Carrie has gone for a lot of statement pieces together here, for a more wearable look, just go for one or two statement accessories to add to a simple dress or choose a gown with lots of interest or an eye catching shape and keep accessories more understated. Don't be afraid to add colour, 2013 is all about stepping away slightly from the traditional ivory or white. Check out our statement hair pieces here image:
  • Amanda Seyfried in Mama Mia
image: Admittedly a bit of a guilty pleasure, but Mama Mia was so successful in it's day as a theatre musical version that they made it into a film starring the fabulous Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and a rather cheesy Pierce Brosnan...*cringe* I adore Grecian style, it's so easy to wear and looks so effortless and beautiful for a bridal look. Amanda Seyfried's character Sophie in the film pulls off the look to perfection, teaming an ivory one shoulder gown layered with light and floaty fabrics with golden tone accessories and bronzed skin. The golden crown she wears in the film is a very traditional type of Greek bridal headdress, set on top of gorgeous beachy waves adorned with delicate flowers. LOVE this look! *Get the look...add golden tone accessories, especially gorgeous teamed with next seasons blush palette we've seen on the catwalks. Achieve beach waves by using a salt water spray on freshly washed hair, roughly blast to 80% dry with a hair dryer, and then seperate your hair into 1-2 inch sections, twist and pin in place. Sleep on it overnight then shake out and run fingers through. Or cheat with a beach wave hot iron by Diva! image:
  •  Rachel McAdams in The Notebook
image: The dress in the notebook is briefly pictured but it has been picked up on by many brides-to-be trying to achieve this ultra classic 1940's look. Featuring an off the shoulder lace design with an illusion neckline finished with pretty buttons. A classic tiara, pearl earrings and pretty red lips complete the look perfectly. We love the glamorous vintage look of Rachel's character 'Allie' throughout the film, in particular this fabulous hair style worn in an earlier scene! Perfect if you are after that sleek Hollywood glam look for your day *Get the achieve this polished look, roughly blow dry hair to 90% dry, then set hair overnight in large rollers, we love the large velcro rollers by 'Sleep rollers' which allow you to have a much needed night's sleep in comfort before the big day, and wake up with big bouncy hair! The trick is to brush the curls out the next day to achieve this smooth, waved look. Backcomb to ensure your style stays put all day and add Tigi hard head hair spray for ultimate hold. This pretty flower adds a touch of girly elegance, try the Bella flower by Lily Bella at VS image:
  • Sasha Barrese in The Hangover
image: Sasha Barrese's character Tracey in one of my favourite wedding films, The Hangover, wears a simplistic but stunning Amsale strapless dress with an eye catching black sash. Not exactly depicting any brides idea of a perfect wedding morning, but of course she still manages to look gorgeous and ultra stylish. The A-line chiffon skirt and ruched bodice are so flattering, an easy shape for most brides to carry off. We absolutely love the simple side ponytail matched with this style, and the fresh flowers that finish the hair. If you're worried about your flowers wilting or turning brown if you are having an early ceremony unlike Tracey, then go for a fabric flower like this one from the collection at Lily Bella *Get the Look...Of course, the best thing about this movie bride, is that the dress was not made especially for the film therefore making the look accessible to any bride! image:
  • Kate Hudson in Bride Wars
image: Kate Hudson is hilarious in this film about 2 best friends competing for the best wedding day, on the same day, at the same place. Brilliant! The Vera Wang dress which she wears is a breathtaking combination of a lace, sweetheart neckline bodice and a skirt made from layers upon layers of tulle for the ultimate princess look. The purple sash she wears around her waist adds that touch of interest which she compliments in her makeup, and finished with a full on cathedral length veil. I have been lucky enough to see this dress in the flesh on a real bride, and it is just as beautiful! The style may not be for everyone, but the princess shape is just what you imagine when you're a little girl. *Get the look...add a splash of colour to your outfit with a bridal belt. Either add or remove the belt at the beginning of your evening reception to change your look! image:
  •  Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride
image: Yes there were a few dresses in this film, and we're going to cheat a little, we have 2 favourites from this one. The Amsale dress which Maggie wears at the end when she actually does get married is so glamorous - off the shoulder for vintage inspired elegance, satin and lace appliques....but teamed with Julia Roberts' gorgeous volumous down-do and set in that outdoor ceremony with an aisle of autumn leaves it gives a much more relaxed feel....the combination is gorgeous! Followed closely by the dress she wears when she attempts to marry Ike for the first time - a pretty 60's inspired princess dress with an illusion neckline and finished with a pair of satin wrist length gloves, and a beautiful 60's style veil complete with satin bow! Love love this style of veil. *Get the look...for 60's chic, add a pair of wrist length satin gloves, we love these matte satin ivory gloves. Add a 60's style veil like the collection from Silver Sixpence in her shoe. image:
  • Katherine Heigl in 27 Dresses
image: Katherine Heigl looks amazing in this film, she plays 'always the bridesmaid' Jane who wears a simple A line lace dress for her beach wedding, with a deep V neck and a gorgeous scalloped detail hemline. Love the hairstyle with this shape of dress, a simple side bun with glamorous 40's waves at the front, and fresh flowers at the back. We just have to add here, that the dress worn by her sister Tess in this film seems to be equally adored! An Amsale dress with spaghetti straps and a stunning open back. *Get the look...luckily both of these dresses are by Amsale, so you can create the look straight from the peg! image: and
  •  Angelina Jolie in Mr and Mrs Smith
image: Angelina Jolie can pull off almost any look, she never fails to look amazing. In the film Mr and Mrs Smith, her character wears this simple yet super elegant 50's style ivory pencil dress complete with Jackie Kennedy style off the shoulder straps and a sweetheart neckline. Angelina's tall slim figure is perfect to pull of this outfit, for a relaxed glamorous wedding look.We love the volumous full circle veil, worn over the face to add a touch of tradition. *Get the look...try Sara Gabriel for a stunning veil like this one. Hair up in a high bun looks super elegant even when the veil is taken out. Use a hair pad or bun ring to make an impact   image:     Let us know which you love and which you loathe!
