The 1940's was a diverse decade when it came to fashion. From casual workwear for women who took to the factories during the war, to smart skirts and glamorous evening gowns. With a focus on a feminine silhouette in contrast to the previous decades, all kinds of fur and animal skins were popular and gloves were an essential accessory for almost every outfit. Despite the clothing rations and fabric shortages, the 1940's was a fabulous decade for both fashion and beauty.
We're taking a look at the glamour and polished looks of this decade and adding a modern spin to bring the look up to date, perfect inspiration for a feminine, classic look this summer. (Minus the fur!)

1940's Evening Style
The 40's evening look was full of glamour! Sweeping floor length gowns with feminine silhouettes, luxurious fabrics and glistening jewels were the outfits of choice for ladies attending evening parties. Create a modern day take on this look with a floor length maxi with pretty sweetheart neckline, team with an embellished bolero to give a true 1940's shape and a delicate pair of evening gloves. Add a deep red lipstick and smooth 1940's curls to finish the look.

For a more low-key occasion like the races, opt for a more demure take on the 40's look. A pleated midi skirt teamed with a pretty blouse in delicate fabrics will give a subtle nod to the 40's. Team this look with a 40's style pillbox hat and pearl jewellery, and finish with a pair of classic heeled pumps.
